UKRAINE SAYS PROGRESS MADE ON IAEA ACCESS TO SEPARATIST-CONTROLLED REGIONS

On August 1, 2021, the spokesperson of the Ukrainian delegation to the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG) Oleksii Arestovych said that Moscow and Kyiv made progress regarding the IAEA access to separatist-controlled territories in Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the east of Ukraine. The issue was discussed in the Economic Working Group during the latest TSG meeting on July 21, 2021.

Parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been out of government control since 2014. According to the Ukrainian authorities, there are two sites in the separatist-controlled territories that require annual IAEA inspections: Donetsk specialized radioactive waste management enterprise of the UkrDO Radon State Corporation and an unspecified medical facility in Luhansk. The IAEA regards the territories as part of Ukraine and does not have contacts with the self-proclaimed governments in Donetsk and Luhansk.

Oleksii Arestovych said that the Russian delegation in the TCG entered a technical discussion regarding the IAEA inspections. The Economic Working Group started preparatory work on the inspectors' visit.
